THE RESEARCH DOMAIN

The architecture behind global finance

Noreste studies the institutions, currencies and financial networks connecting economies. Our research examines dollar funding, cross-border credit, reserve systems and payment infrastructure, with attention to how monetary conditions and geopolitical decisions influence access to capital and the movement of money.

We examine both the structure of the system and the pressures that can reshape it, from bank funding constraints to changes in financial relationships between countries.

RESEARCH LENSES

How we examine the system

Four connected areas guide our study of financial infrastructure, dependencies and systemic change.

Dollar funding & liquidity
We examine offshore dollar borrowing, funding costs, liquidity conditions and the channels through which monetary tightening can affect banks and borrowers across borders.
Cross-border banking
We study correspondent banking relationships, international credit, trade finance and the balance-sheet connections linking financial institutions across jurisdictions.
Messaging & settlement
We examine payment messaging networks such as SWIFT alongside clearing and settlement arrangements, considering their distinct roles, dependencies and operational constraints.
Reserves & financial power
We study reserve-currency choices, sanctions exposure, financial fragmentation and efforts to develop alternative payment arrangements, with attention to adoption and practical limits.

QUESTIONS WE PURSUE

Where structural change begins

Our research follows the questions that reveal dependencies, constraints and the conditions for lasting change.

Where does dollar funding become vulnerable?

We examine refinancing needs, maturity mismatches, access to liquidity and the connections between banks, non-bank institutions and borrowers.

How do financial restrictions reshape trade?

We study changes in banking access, payment routes and financing relationships, including the costs and operational constraints associated with rerouting financial flows.

What would make alternative systems durable?

We assess liquidity, institutional trust, interoperability and commercial adoption when examining alternative currencies and payment arrangements.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

From financial signals to institutional context

  1. Map the relationships

Identify institutions, funding channels and payment arrangements that connect markets.

  2. Examine the pressures

Study liquidity, policy developments and the constraints affecting those relationships.

  3. Interpret the implications

Assess how changes may influence resilience, access to capital and long-term financial structure.
